“As small as a world” community ceramic project (2022)
This semester-long project involved a group of primary students, secondary students, parents, faculty and staff investigating the marine life in and around Sai Kung. After exploring and researching through photos and drawings, we worked together to develop skills in ceramic construction and surface decoration. The resulting garden poles are permanently displayed at the entrance to the school.
The title is taken from a poem by e.e. cummings
maggie and milly and molly and may
maggie and milly and molly and may
went down to the beach(to play one day)
and maggie discovered a shell that sang
so sweetly she couldn't remember her troubles, and
milly befriended a stranded star
whose rays five languid fingers were;
and molly was chased by a horrible thing
which raced sideways while blowing bubbles:and
may came home with a smooth round stone
as small as a world and as large as alone.
For whatever we lose (like a you or a me)
it's always ourselves we find in the sea
Community mural (2018-2021)
Initiated by me, then led by three DP students as a project, this mural was interrupted by first the protests, and then Covid. After many stops-and-starts (and a year after the original students graduated), a team of middle-school students finally finished it off. A tale of resilience and perseverance.

Graffiti wars (2019)
In 2019 Hong Kong Academy hosted Graffiti Wars, an inter-school live graffiti competition. Students from HKA were coached over 6 weeks to develop and prepare their final design aimed at celebrating the refugee community in Hong Kong.
STEAM mural after-school activity, (2016)
Sixteen students (G9-11) explored the role of observational drawing in science, dissecting hearts and learning about da Vinci's anatomical drawings. They also explored the role Renaissance perspectives, as developed by artists, played in the development of non-Euclidean mathematics. They worked together with outside artists to design and complete the mural.
Community mural (2015-2016)
Twenty students (G6-12) worked to design a mural representing the Hong Kong Academy community. They taught clay tile workshops to students and teachers, designed and glazed the mural.
Final mural consists of 116 tiles and is approx 1m x 2m.
community
In previous and current schools, I actively create community within school and externally, for example founding the ChineseTEA Facebook group for HK-based art teachers, hosting weekly yoga sessions for colleagues, or organising community life drawing sessions for students, staff and parents.
